Naval Museum; ORP Błyskawica – museum ship
The Naval Museum documents the history of naval weapons at sea and the history of maritime Poland. In the museum building you can visit the permanent exhibition “It’s our sworn duty to defend you...” presenting the history of Polish Navy, as well as models of old ships and the 20th century armament of Polish ships. The open-air exhibition at the entrance to the Seaside Boulevard features torpedoes, water mines, anti-aircraft guns as well as aircraft and helicopters of the Polish Navy. The warship Błyskawica is the oldest preserved destroyer – a veteran of World War II and the only allied combat ship that actively participated in operations throughout the war. It covered 138 356 nautical miles in wartime service. Since 1976, it has been a museum ship, a part of the Naval Museum. Below the deck you can see an exhibition devoted to the World War II battles. It includes the Virtuti Militari Order which the ship was honoured with. ORP Błyskawica still carries the white and red war flag. It remains in the 3rd Flotilla of Naval Ships and has a full-time crew. source: www.gdynia.pl
